Gophers surge with Watts after offer

Earlier this month, Chicago (Ill.) Phillips three-star defensive tackle Amir Watts laid out his top five, but that group is already changing after a new school extended a scholarship offer on Tuesday.

"My coach told me that (Minnesota) offered and I had called them as soon as I got to lunch," Watts said. "I talked to the defensive coordinator and he was just telling me they've liked me for a long time, so I guess they finally got around to offering me. He was just saying he thinks I can help them and fit in their defensive scheme."
Watts has taken a fresh look at his recruitment since de-committing from Western Michigan in August. Minnesota has secured a strong look with their offer.
"They are definitely in the top five now. I was just telling my coach that may be a place I take an official visit to," Watts said. "There's just something about the Gophers I like. Obviously they are in the Big Ten and I feel like they have a great program."
The top five Watts laid out earlier this month consisted of Kansas, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse and Tennessee.
"I'm putting Minnesota in that top five, but I don't know who they'd replace," Watts said.
Tennessee is the only school in Watts' top group that has yet to offer the 6-foot-3, 260-pound defensive linemen, but the Volunteers continue to recruit him.
"They keep telling me to come down and visit, make sure everything is what I say it is as far as height/weight," Watts said. "That's where we stand with them."
No official visits have been scheduled and Watts said none will be taken until after his senior season is complete.
