Eric Scott giving his verbal
commitment to the Wildcats.
Scott (6-5, 252, 4.75) committed to Kentucky after making an official visit
this past weekend. He picked the Cats over Vanderbilt and East Carolina,
primarily, and was also receiving interest from Georgia, Georgia Tech and
Alabama throughout the recruiting process.
"After getting to see the (UK) campus and facilities, meeting the coaches and
players, I knew that was the place I wanted to be," Scott said. "It's a great
college atmosphere there, and I think they're a program on the rise. I want to
be part of that building process.
"Plus, I think their new coaching staff can bring out the best in me. I was
real impressed with coach (Ron) Hudson, their offensive coordinator. He told me
to be ready to catch a lot of balls in his offense. He said they love to throw
to the tight ends. I can't wait to catch some passes from Jared Lorenzen.
They've got a great quarterback with him."
With no experienced tight ends on the roster for 2003, Scott expects to
compete for playing time as a true freshman.
"They said the opportunity is there if I work hard and pick things up," he
said. "According to coach Hudson, it's wide-open."
Scott played both tight end and defensive tackle for Etowah High School as a
senior. He was the primary receiver in a run-oriented offense, according to
coach Norb Terza, and caught a team-high four touchdown passes.
"He's a good blocker, too. Has great feet," Terza said. "He's also a starter
for our basketball team, so he's got all that agility and those skills that make
him a good all-around athlete."
