Georgia quarterback has a favorite

One of the most exciting quarterback prospects from the Peach State in the Class of 2011 is Martay Mattox. Mattox, 6-1 and 190 pounds, is from Athens. Last season he threw for 1,879 yards and16 touchdown passes (only two interceptions), rushed for 879 yards and 16 touchdowns for Clarke Central High School.
"I mostly play quarterback but I do a little bit of everything," Mattox said. "I split out at wide receiver, play defensive back and return punts. Most schools like me as a quarterback and some schools have talked with me about recruiting me as an athlete.

"I am the type of quarterback that can extend a play with my legs and I have a pretty strong arm. I also make good decisions."
According to Mattox he currently has a trio of offers - South Carolina, USF and Maryland. Meanwhile, teams like Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Tennessee, Clemson, and N.C. State are all recruiting him hard.
This past weekend, Mattox traveled to Columbia, S.C. to take in the spring game for the Gamecocks.
"I visited South Carolina for their spring game last Saturday. It was good and I liked it a lot. It's a nice atmosphere and they had great weather. Right now they have (Stephen) Garcia but South Carolina doesn't have much experience behind him. I know I can come in and compete. I also have a pretty good relationship there with the coaches so it's a good situation for me.
"They are my favorite right now but at the same time I have talked with them more than anyone so that gives them the edge. To be honest, I am open with everyone."
So what factors will be important to Mattox and his decision?
"Coaching is big for me. I want to play for a good strong coach and an offensive minded coach. Academics are important to me because I need something besides football."
Mattox says he is planning on visiting Maryland.
"Yeah, I plan to go to Maryland but I am just not sure when. It should be in a few weeks."
