ALBANY, Ga. -- College football coaches love to get a little momentum when it comes to recruiting. Trenton Thompson's decision Tuesday night to become a Georgia Bulldog certainly qualifies.
The nation's No. 3 player ended months of speculation during a ceremony at his school, selecting Georgia over Auburn, Alabama, Florida State and Clemson.
He becomes the Bulldogs' 17th verbal commitment and second five-star performer to join the Class of 2015, along with athlete Terry Godwin. At 6-foot-4 and 294 pounds, Thompson has been on Georgia's radar since the very beginning. In fact, the Bulldogs were the first school to offer the Westover standout.
His commitment continues what's been quite the roll for the Bulldogs on the recruiting front.
It was just a little under a month ago when Georgia received commitments from two of the top three players in the Class of 2016 - quarterback Jacob Eason and offensive tackle Ben Cleveland.
That was just the beginning.
The very next day, three-star safety Deontai Williams flipped from arch-rival Florida, followed a week later by four-star wide receiver Michael Chigbu from New Orleans. Three-star JUCO running back Chris Carson and four-star offensive lineman Pat Allen joined the fold on Aug. 3 and 4, respectively.
No doubt Bulldog defensive line coach Tracy Rocker is a happy man. Georgia will graduate two players off its current defensive line -- seniors Ray Drew and Toby Johnson -- and restocking the position has been one of the Bulldogs' top recruiting goals.
Thompson obviously fills that bill.
Blessed with outstanding quickness and strength, Thompson's motor is also a major attribute despite countless double-teams by opposing offensive lines.
Thompson's commitment may not be the only big news for Georgia this week. On Saturday, Creekside wide receiver Jayson Stanley is scheduled to make his announcement from a list that includes Georgia and Auburn. Stanley currently holds 18 offers, including others from Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon.
Could others be on the verge of joining?
Five-star safety Rashad Roundtree and five-star defensive end Josh Sweat have Georgia in their final five, while Bulldog coaches have not given up on five-star offensive lineman and USC commit Chuma Edoga. In addition, the staff is hoping four-star defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter decides to join his brother Joseph in Athens and flips his commitment from Alabama.
