Jeremie Johnson learned a hard lesson during the 2001 season.
Johnson, a 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback from Atlanta's Booker T. Washington
High School, capped a fantastic junior year by recording 64 tackles and leading
the state of Georgia with nine interceptions.
"He's got everything you look for in a true cover corner," said BTW assistant
coach Kevin Weaver. "He can stick with anyone one-on-one and lock them down.
He's got great hands, acceleration to the ball and agility to make tough plays."
Johnson (4.45 forty, 250 bench) is getting plenty of attention coming off his
all-state season. Ole Miss, Maryland, North Carolina, Clemson, Auburn, Memphis
and Hampton have all offered scholarships to date.
"We expect several more to be offering soon," Weaver said. "Everybody's been
in here to see him."
Johnson is also a solid student, sporting a 3.3 GPA. He'll be taking the SAT
in June and expects to easily make his qualifying score, according to Weaver.
"One thing about this season, not only do we have a lot of talented kids, but
we've got the talented kids with grades," said Weaver, also citing BTW standouts
Jarvis Jackson (LB), Avery Roberson (FS) and Matthew Wilcox (LB). "In the past,
we've had a lot of kids who didn't qualify, and that turned a lot of schools
away. People used to get mad and avoid this school at times. But these are great
kids. We had six schools in here today (May 16) and had seven come by
yesterday."
