Deante Battle is currently sporting 13 official scholarship offers from
some of the nation's best programs known for both football and academics. The
schools include: Colorado, Stanford, Notre Dame, Duke, Virginia, Northwestern,
Penn State, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Memphis Wake Forest and UConn.
"I'm just taking it all in right now," Battle said. "I
haven't narrowed things down to my favorites yet, as far as one or two schools
are concerned. I want to take some visits before I do that, but I do like
Colorado, Stanford, Texas, Florida and Virginia Tech a lot. That's probably my
top five right now."
On the field, the 5-foot-10, 187-pound Battle (4.43
forty) has the skills to be one of the top cornerbacks in the country. He
recorded 94 tackles and 15 pass breakups as a junior.
"I didn't have any interceptions because people really
stayed away from my side of the field," he said. "The passes I broke up weren't
really catchable balls. People were really aware of me. This year, I'm hoping to
have more chances. I want to lead the state in interceptions.
"I'm real good on the line, jamming receivers and
getting them off their routes. I also have the speed to run with anyone down the
field."
Off the field, he's equally impressive, boasting a 3.6
GPA and 1180 on the SAT.
"Academics is No. 1 with me," he said. "Wherever I go,
that will be the main thing. That's what I like about Colorado and Stanford
right now. I want to be an engineer, and they have great engineering schools to
go along with their football tradition."
His list of prospective schools are scattered from end
of the country to the other.
"I don't really have a problem with going away," he
said. "I kind of like the idea."
Battle will also double as a running back this season. He needs approximately 1,100 yards to break the school record held by current Georgia Tech back Reuben Houston. Battle rushed for 681 yards on only 48 carries as a junior.
As soon as his senior season ends, he plans to get a head start in college by graduating in December.
