Georgia athlete back into football mode

Baseball season has held the attention of one of Georgia's top football players
this summer.

"I've been playing a lot of baseball with my summer league
team," said Parkview's
Joe
Sturdivant, "so I really haven't had a chance to spend much time at camps and that sort of thing. I went to the Nike camp at Alabama, but
outside of our team workouts, I haven't done much with football."
August has arrived, however, and now Sturdivant's focus has
turned to helping Parkview repeat as Class 5A champions while drawing the eyes
of college scouts. He has an official offer from Southern Methodist and lists
other favorites as Georgia Tech, Navy, Michigan, Maryland, South Carolina and
Stanford.
Clemson, Georgia, Kentucky, North
Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia have also shown interest.
"I'm hearing the most from Georgia Tech," he said. "And I
probably like them the most right now. They've mentioned the possibility of
playing both ways, wide receiver and DB. I really like the thought of that
because I like having the ball in my hands just about as much as hitting
people."
As a junior, Sturdivant (6-3, 190, 4.5)
did plenty of both. On the offensive side of the ball, he finished with 1,012
total yards. On defense, he recorded 133 tackles, six pass breakups and two
interceptions. He also chipped in with more than 300 return yards.
He's primed for an even bigger season in 2002.
"I'm probably two or three times stronger than I was at
this point last year," he said. "And I've also dropped my 40 time down. I've had
a 4.45. I just feel like I'm going to be an all-around better player this
season."
