Garden City DB makes pick

Garden City C.C. coach J.J. Eckert calls cornerback Rock Dennis one of his top defenders, despite having a roster littered with four and three-star prospects. And now Dennis heading to the next level. The 5-foot-10, 178-pound two-star prospect made his decision late last night and is heading to Conference USA.
"I'm going to SMU," Dennis, a native of Leavenworth, Kan., said. "I just felt more comfortable there, and they treated me really nice. Dallas is more my type of city. I was down there Thursday through Saturday for a visit. I just felt like it was the right place for me.

"So I'm going to sign on Wednesday and then head down there after the first of the year ready to make an impact."
Dennis said he was also recruited heavily by Utah State and Western Kentucky. He was recruited by former Garden City C.C. coach and current SMU assistant Jim Gush.
"He was just really laid back," Dennis said. "Coach Gush really sees the game form a player's point of view."
Eckert thinks SMU is getting a steal.
"He's a real technician," Eckert said. "He's a really good zone coverage corner."
