Gamecocks land 4-star WR Harmon

Landing a commitment from four-star wide receiver Kelvin Harmon on Thursday continues the trend of South Carolina grabbing some quality players out of southern New Jersey. The Palmyra, N.J., star had an extensive offer sheet, but it sounds like his official visit to Columbia last weekend pushed the Gamecocks over the edge.

"I like the atmosphere there," said the 6-foot-2, 196-pound Harmon. "I also really the coaches and the offense they run. They throw the ball a lot over there and they have a good, young quarterback too."
The South Carolina coaching staff did a good job of pressing the right buttons for Harmon. They explained that he could make an early impact.
"Coach Spurrier Jr. has been telling me I could play right away," he said. "I also saw that when I went to the game that they needed some wideouts."
Harmon knows how dangerous he can be early in his career and knows that South Carolina is willing to play young players.
"I have the ability to get on the field early," said Harmon. "They've had freshman wide receivers starting before. I might be able to do that there."
The fact that South Carolina has landed New Jersey natives like Damiere Byrd helped make Harmon feel more comfortable picking the Gamecocks.
"That played a role, seeing other players from New Jersey there," he said. "Those guys play a lot there too."
N.C. State was Harmon's other finalist.
