Galena Park athletes making decisions

Galena Park High School is enjoying a quick start to their undefeated 3-0 season. A few of their athletes have followed suit, jumping on official offers early and committing.
Defensive back Desmond Jackson and fullback/tight-end Chancellor Roberson have verbally committed to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Offensive lineman Jose Barcenas should be verbally committed to Rice University before the end of the month.

At Class 4A Galena Park, coach Mike Coker's players are virtually interchangeable parts in his system that gets the best athletes on the field. The long and short of it, he plays kids both ways and that cross-training gives them more options in college.
Jackson (6-2, 195-pounds) played quarterback, safety and wide receiver as a junior and had 49 tackles and caused two fumbles at safety.
"Desmond can do it all," Coker said. "He can really hit and cover a lot of ground in the secondary. He plays basketball, so he has good feet and hands, but could put on 30-pounds easy. I think his commitment is solid."
Roberson will join Jackson in Lafayette with a solid commitment to the Rajun Cajuns. At 6-foot-2, 240-pounds, Roberson plays tight end, defensive end and fullback for the Yellow Jackets. He also starts for the Yellow Jacket basketball team.
"Chancellor is a freak, athletically," Coker said. "We moved him from tight end to defensive end last year and he is going to dominate. He is more athletic than Trumaine (Johnson) and may be stronger."
With a 3.9 grade-point-average and a 6-foot-4, 290-pound frame, Barcenas is ready to put his recruiting process to bed.
"I think it's a paperwork thing for him," Coker said. "When he gets the official offer he will take it."
The only Yellow Jacket left on the recruiting board is Chris Hardy, who is following up his junior season when he rushed for 1,233 yards and 13 touchdowns with another successful campaign.
Hardy is currently Houston's eighth leading rusher in Class 4A with over 400 yards a 10.0-yard average per carry. Hardy also plays cornerback for Galena Park.
"Chris in not a grinder, but a guy who runs away from people," Coker said. "He can slash, catch the ball and mix it up in between the tackles a little bit. A lot of people are interested in him right now and he has grades. He will go somewhere in the end."
