Gabriel Douglas lands first offer, commits on the spot to Texas Tech

Hey - when you know, you know.

Gabriel Douglas went from being a hot name in 2018 to being Texas Tech’s second wide receiver and fourth commitment overall in next year’s class in a matter of hours.

The Red Raiders were the first to offer Douglas and offered him just a week after talking to him for the first time. He said it didn’t take much convincing from receivers coach Emmett Jones to get him on board with the program.

“I feel like they have good coaches, and I know they throw the ball a lot,” he said.

For now, that’s sort of the extent of it as far as Douglas is concerned, and he’s alright with that.

Since the relationship with Tech is fresh, he hasn’t exactly been paying close attention to the team this season. He has yet to go to a game or see the campus, but now that he’s committed, that could change if schedules allow.

Douglas’ Denton-Ryan team is off this weekend, but Texas Tech travels to Kansas State.

The decision to commit so quickly might come across as a hasty one, considering the interest and offers he’s likely to receive through the end of this season and into his senior year, but what little he knows about the program thus far is at least enough to work from moving forward.

“I feel like since Texas Tech was my first offer, if I could commit, then they’ll take care of me,” he said. “Wherever I was planning on going, I was planning on getting to play my freshman year and they promised me that’ll happen.”

Douglas said that he’s had the quick and full support of his friends and his mother, and that he is friendly with 2016 Tech signee T.J. Vasher.

“I don’t even think (Vasher) knows I committed yet,” he said.

Douglas’ commitment is one that’s going to be closely monitored and will certainly continued to be nurtured by Jones and company but he said there’s nothing to worry about as long as he feels his future with the team will be what’s been promised.

“I haven’t really been watching the games, but I know about their offense,” he said. “Coach said my role is going to be just for them to get me the ball. All they have to do is hold up their end of the bargain.”
