DALLAS, Tex. -- On the heels of leading his Newton team to a 3A-Division 2 state championship in December, 2019 do-it-all offensive weapon Tamauzia Brown has been drawing the interest of more and more college programs.

As of today, a few still seem to be in a holding pattern before making an offer, but they might not have that luxury for much longer. Ahead of his appearance this weekend in Dallas for a Fast Houston 7v7 training session, Brown mentioned that Florida State and Houston could be the next few teams to enter the race for his commitment.

“A lot of schools are coming out to see the Big Three; Me, Josh (Foster) and Darwin (Barlow),” he said. “Coach said that Florida State is supposed to offer us after we go out there to visit. Houston is supposed to come out here and offer all three of us, so it’s been fun picking up offers here and there.”

For now, Baylor seems to have taken the opportunity to get as involved with Brown as it can before too many other teams start vying for more of his attention, and defensive backs coach Francis Brown brought his family to Newton’s basketball game last Friday night. Tamauzia Brown - who plays as many positions on the hardwood as he does on the football field for the Eagles - said that his team lost by just two points, but he enjoyed having the Bears coach in attendance.

IN HIS WORDS

On Baylor

“Me and Coach Fran talk just about every night on the phone,” he said. “We just talk about different stuff - our childhood, how we grew up - it was nice seeing him on Friday. I’ve never had a college coach come to watch me play basketball, so it was a good feeling to have him come up there.

“He brought his kids, too. The kids wanted us to dunk, so we had to dunk a couple times in warmups for them.”

On Texas A&M - Aggies offensive line coach Jim Turner also visited Newton last Friday

“He just asked me a couple of questions, and was wondering when me, Josh, Darwin and Caiden (Walker) were gonna come up there and visit,” he said. “He brought up staying a night with Roney (Elam) because he’s from Newton. So it would be fun to go up there, stay a night and hang out with the A&M football team.”

RIVALS REACTION

Since the end of last season, Newton has suddenly become a recruiting hotbed with so many players becoming targets of major programs. Also not mentioned among the names of the frequently offered thus far is 2020 defensive end James Sylvester - who seems primed for similar fortune.

Although the group training on Sunday was a small one, Brown was a clear star among the others participating and in addition to the teams already mentioned, he said Oregon and Michigan State - both known for recruiting wide receiver talent out of Texas - have begun showing him some attention on social media as well.
