FSU camp notes: Hicks arrives on a mission

Robert Hicks ()

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Robert Hicks didn’t work out at Florida State on Tuesday, but his trip to campus didn't lack intent. The four-star Auburn commit intends to participate on day No. 2 of the Seminoles' camp on Wednesday. But as the linebacker watched the action on day one, he let his intentions be known.

A class of 2018 prospect, Hicks is here to earn a scholarship offer, and it will impact his recruitment greatly should it arrive.

“If they offer, Florida State will easily become No. 2 on my list,” Hicks said on Wednesday.

The Miami Booker T Washington standout is in frequent contact with schools such as Kentucky, Oregon State and Baylor, but the two in-state schools have his attention. Florida State could become a player in his recruitment at any moment, and it seems the same might apply to Florida.

“I’m going to visit Florida for Friday Night Lights,” Hicks said. “They have a lot of interest in me, but they said they won’t offer unless I’m not committed to Auburn anymore, so we’ll see.”

OTHER NOTES FROM DAY ONE

-- Florida State commit Cyrus Fagan didn’t work out on Tuesday but says he intends to take an official visit to USC. The Rivals100 safety also plans to take an official to FSU. His pledge to the Seminoles is still considered strong, as securing an official visit and changing his mind are two very different tasks. That said, USC is seen as one of the few threats to give Fagan something to consider.

-- Amari Burney arrived at Florida State attempting to earn an offer and may well do so before he departs. Burney worked out at safety at Florida State’s camp and turned in one of the day’s most impressive performances. Burney is also hoping to earn an offer from Alabama, where he camped over the weekend. He intends to attend Florida’s Friday Night Lights camp later this week.

-- Class of 2019 prospect Michael Morris remains committed to Florida Sate but says Miami, Clemson and Kentucky remain in pursuit. He has not scheduled other campus visits as thing stand now, but he refused to rule out the possibility. Morris, whose father played for Florida State, is seen as solid a commitment as a 2019 prospect can be.

-- Miami Booker T Washington defensive end Guy Thomas will go straight to Florida’s Friday Night Lights event when he finishes working out at Florida State. Thomas says he intends to announce an official top five before the upcoming season, but he expects Louisville, Nebraska and Auburn to make the cut. He intends to wait until Signing Day to make a decision.

-- Wide receiver James Bostic says that N.C. State, Vanderbilt and Temple stand out from his pack of offers. He recently attended Vanderbilt’s satellite camp but has no other visits on the schedule following Florida State. According to Bostic, Kentucky is in frequent contact and could be close to extending a scholarship offer.

-- West Palm Beach (Fla.) tight end Wayne McCary showed up to camp mending an ACL injury but carrying a few offers nonetheless. Louisville recently offered the impressively built 2018 prospect despite the fact that he’s likely sidelined for the season. McCary named Iowa State as his leader on Tuesday, but his recruitment is subject to change depending on how he rebounds from his injury.

-- Hollywood (Fla.) South Broward defensive back Jeffery Lubin says Rutgers currently leads his recruitment. He hopes to visit the school’s campus in the coming months, but says his bond with the Scarlet Knights staff is already strong. According to Lubin, who recently camped at Georgia, Iowa could be close to extending a scholarship offer.
