Raymore (Mo.) Raymore-Peculiar's Cameron Coffman and Plainfield (N.J.) High's Tyrone Johnson are a couple of names to keep an eye on in the 2011 class.
We take a closer look at them and some of the other top underclassmen our analysts saw in person, listed alphabetically.
PROSPECT EVALUATIONS: UNDERCLASSMEN
QB CAMERON COFFMAN (6-2/175), Peculiar (Mo.) Raymore-Peculiar
CLASS OF 2011
»CRABTREE'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CONSIDERING: Undecided
PERFORMANCE: Shattered a Missouri state record Friday night when he threw for 430 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Finished the game 18-for-21 for 534 yards and five touchdowns in a 60-41 victory over Liberty (Mo.) High.
STRENGTHS: Takes snaps under center and makes good drops. Also shows good decision-making ability, as several of his throws were to the second and third receiver. Deadly accurate. Also athletic enough to roll out and throw on the run.
WEAKNESSES: Arm strength will continue to improve as he gets older. Did stay in the pocket a little too much at times and was sacked on a few occasions. – JEREMY CRABTREE
RB ANDRE DAWSON (6-1/210), Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Washington
CLASS OF 2010
OFFERS: Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin
PERFORMANCE: Ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns in 27-23 loss to Iowa City (Iowa) High.
STRENGTHS: Has tremendous size for a tailback, and when he lowers his shoulder pads, he will knock the defender backward. Also has an above-average change of direction.
WEAKNESSES: He should hit the hole a little harder and use his size and strength more often rather than trying to run laterally. – BARRY EVERY
QB A.J. DERBY (6-4/215), Iowa City (Iowa) High
CLASS OF 2010
OFFERS: Cincinnati, Iowa, Wisconsin
PERFORMANCE: Passed for 154 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 105 yards and three more scores in 27-23 win over Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Washington.
STRENGTHS: A versatile player who played both ways and on every special teams unit except kickoffs. He is not afraid to just run someone over, a la Tim Tebow. Has great size; if quarterback does not work out, he would make an excellent tight end prospect.
WEAKNESSES: Raw as a quarterback; he really needs reps throwing the football. Derby missed most of the summer with an injury and was unable to throw. Also needs work on seeing the whole field, as most of his throws were to the boundary. – B.E.
CB MARC HARRISON (5-11/180) Peculiar (Mo.) Raymore-Peculiar
CLASS OF 2010
CONSIDERING: Undecided
PERFORMANCE: Had an interception in a 60-41 victory over Liberty (Mo.) High.
STRENGTHS: Has good size and build to play cornerback in man-to-man situations. Showed good ability to break on the ball and go up and get it. Also has nice ballhawking ability. Did a good job in run support. Went head-to-head with Marcus Lucas and did well.
WEAKNESSES: Might not be a true burner, but it was hard to tell because Liberty didn't throw in his direction too many times. – J.C.
QB TYRONE JOHNSON (6-2/185), Plainfield (N.J.) High
CLASS OF 2011
CONSIDERING: Undecided
PERFORMANCE: Johnson played the first half of Plainfield's 35-0 loss to Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep and was 5-of-13 for 72 yards.
STRENGTHS: Johnson has a good frame for a sophomore quarterback and is smart and mature under center for a younger player. He knows when to throw the ball away and already is reading defenses well.
WEAKNESSES: Johnson, like most younger players, needs to get stronger and fill out his frame. He tends to be predictable when scrambling, as he prefers to go to his left. – MIKE FARRELL
OT JAKE KAUFMAN (6-8/315), Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep
CLASS OF 2010
CONSIDERING: Undecided
PERFORMANCE: Kaufman played well at left tackle for most of the scrimmage in Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep's 35-0 win over Plainfield (N.J.) High.
STRENGTHS: Kaufman is huge and a road-grader in the running game. You simply can't teach his size, and he's willing to get physical.
WEAKNESSES: He struggles at the second level hitting moving targets, and needs to improve his footwork in pass protection. – M.F.
WR MARCUS LUCAS (6-4/180), Liberty (Mo.) High
CLASS OF 2010
CONSIDERING: Offer from Kansas State, likes Missouri
PERFORMANCE: Had six receptions for 69 yards and two touchdowns in a 60-41 loss to Raymore (Mo.) Raymore-Peculiar.
STRENGTHS: Lucas has the build of a college receiver already. He also showed flashes of speed when he caught the ball underneath and broke downfield. Showed amazing hands when he snagged a ball out of mid-air that was thrown behind him.
WEAKNESSES: Needs to learn how to get off the line better and defeat double-teams thrown his way. Did struggle a little early with a few drops, but later showed true form with acrobatic catches. – J.C.
ATH KEITH LUMPKIN (6-8/270), Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep
CLASS OF 2010
CONSIDERING: Undecided
PERFORMANCE: Lumpkin played defensive end, tight end and tackle in Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep's 35-0 win over Plainfield (N.J.) High.
STRENGTHS: Lumpkin has a great frame with long arms and excellent feet. He plays some tight end, which shows his mobility; on defense, he disrupts passes with his height.
WEAKNESSES: He is raw and still learning the game. He tends to reach a bit when blocking and needs to be more physical. His pad level is too high right now. – M.F.
G PARKER MACK (6-4/305), Little Rock (Ark.) Pulaski Academy
CLASS OF 2010
CONSIDERING: Early offers from Boston College and North Carolina.
PERFORMANCE: Started at left tackle for Pulaski Academy in a 46-29 loss to West Helena (Ark.) Central.
STRENGTHS: Mack has good athleticism and good feet. For Pulaski Academy, he is almost exclusively in pass-blocking situations and that is clearly his strength. He plays with good balance and doesn't overextend himself.
WEAKNESSES: He is more of a finesse lineman right now and needs to continue to get stronger and more physical. He sometimes gets overpowered on the bull rush and needs to continue to get stronger on his initial punch. – BARTON SIMMONS
G MARK RIVAS (6-4/265), Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep
CLASS OF 2010
CONSIDERING: Undecided
PERFORMANCE: Rivas played guard with the second team for the most part in Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep's 35-0 win over Plainfield (N.J.) High.
STRENGTHS: Rivas is a pure inside guy who shows good technique and uses his hands well. He's mobile in pass protection.
WEAKNESSES: He needs to get stronger and play more physically. Rivas tends to shield off defenders rather than engage them. – M.F.
G ANTHONY WILKENS (6-4/330), Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep
CLASS OF 2010
CONSIDERING: Undecided
PERFORMANCE: Wilkens played right guard with the first team for the most part in Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep's 35-0 win over Plainfield (N.J.) High.
STRENGTHS: Wilkens is massive and uses his size well in the running game. He can wear down opponents with his size and power.
WEAKNESSES: He needs to lose weight and get in better condition. He'd be better off playing around 310 or 315 pounds, which would help his mobility. – M.F.
