Fresno State lands four-star Tyrone Sampson

The odyssey of Detroit (Mich.) East English Village’s Tyrone Sampson’s recruitment has come to an end, with the four-star offensive center deciding to commit and sign with the Fresno State Bulldogs on Friday according to his coach, Rod Oden. That decision ends what was a strange two months for the one-time Syracuse commit.

THE LATEST

Instead of signing in the early period and enrolling at Syracuse mid-year, as had been his plan, Sampson announced on Dec. 20 he was ending his eight-month commitment to the Orange and re-opening his recruitment. He considered several schools including Arizona, Cincinnati, Louisville and Michigan State. An official visit was scheduled to Ole Miss for Jan. 26, and one to Nebraska for Feb. 2 after the Cornhuskers offered in January. Both of those trips would eventually be cancelled, however, and when National Signing Day came around Sampson did not have a place to go. Fresno State got in contact with Sampson late and he left for an official visit there Thursday with a decision coming on Friday.

RIVALS’ REACTION

The truth is, when the music stopped on National Signing Day, Sampson was left without a chair. It appeared his plan was to take the Nebraska offer, but they ran out of spots before he made an official visit to Lincoln. Mississippi State and Arizona State showed strong interest late but offers never materialized. The No. 4 offensive center prospect in the 2018 class and an Army All-American, Sampson had dozens of opportunities he could have accepted at points during his recruitment. When he was ready to sign, however, none of those opportunities remained. Now Sampson will head out to see what life is like in the Mountain West Conference.
