Four-star Kalon Gervin selects his home-state Spartans

For the fifth time in the last eight classes, Mark Dantonio has landed the state of Michigan’s top-ranked prospect. Rivals250 cornerback Kalon Gervin of Detroit Cass Tech announced his commitment to Michigan State on Saturday.

“I chose Michigan State,” Gervin confirmed. “They were probably the most consistent school throughout my process. And it was the most comfortable. Coach Dantonio really made me a priority with calling me every week and the little things he did.”

Defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett was another key component in convincing Gervin Michigan State was the right fit for him, but the Spartan’s best assets in this recruitment were their current players, many of whom Gervin knew from childhood.

“We’re cool – Trishton Jackson, Hunter Rison, of course Jordan Reid. I talk to those dudes daily,” Gervin said. “It helped a lot and I already knew about the school before I went up there. Jordan Reid, before I even thought about going there he already told me about it. It’s been a family up there and I’m ready to go up there, compete and win games.”

That competition will start almost immediately for Gervin. The four-star will sign his letter of intent on Dec. 20 and enroll at the University next month. When he does, Gervin expects to factor into the defensive backfield equation in his first year.

“I am trying to fit into the other side from Josiah Scott,” Gervin said. “Coach Barnett and Coach Dantonio said they think I can do almost exactly what he did this year.”

Gervin’s final recruiting obligation will be his official visit to East Lansing the weekend of Dec. 8. He previously took official visits to Oklahoma, Nebraska and Oregon and had narrowed his choices down to Michigan State and Oregon in the final week.
