There were seven schools listed on Chans Cox's database page as favorites but the four-star linebacker from Lakeside (Ariz.) Blue Ridge wants to make it clear that an eighth team - Oklahoma - is still under serious consideration.
Cox, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound prospect, also has Arizona State, Arkansas, Boise State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, USC and Washington on his evolving list.
"I'm still going to accept other schools," Cox said. "That's not like an official top eight. That's just where I'm at right now. I want to get out and take those unofficial visits to those schools. It's just hard to get out to every single one.
"I'm going to limit it down to five before I take my unofficial visits and then try to get out to those schools and then take some officials if I don't commit earlier than the season."
Cox, rated as the No. 10 outside linebacker and No. 58 prospect in the 2013 class by Rivals.com, plans to graduate early so his commitment timetable might be pushed up but the Lakeside Blue Ridge standout is not rushing his decision.
Before he makes his pledge, Cox wants to narrow his list even further and then take some trips. All the while, the four-star said he plans to remain open to other programs if they want to get involved.
"I'm planning to graduate early so I might have to commit pretty soon," Cox said. "That's why I want to take some unofficial visits and see where that goes. That's where I'm at right now.
"I'm still committed to whatever else comes in. It's not like it was at the beginning but I'm still hearing from Michigan State, Washington State and some others. I'm keeping in really good touch with the coaches I've been talking to."
