Thornton continues to reel in attention befitting one of the nation's top-rated running backs.
Thornton (6-0, 195, 4.45) has received calls from Georgia, Florida, Auburn,
Florida State, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Middle Tennessee and Clemson in the
last two weeks and added scholarship offers from Ole Miss and Mississippi State,
giving him more than 20 thus far.
"I've talked to a lot of coaches lately," he said. "It's been pretty busy around
here. I talked to the head coaches from Alabama (Dennis Franchione) and
Mississippi State (Jackie Sherrill). That was kind of nice. I've enjoyed talking
to all of them."
The last month has seen a shift in Thornton's list of favorites. Georgia,
Florida, Auburn and North Carolina are still in his main group, but Maryland,
LSU and Clemson have dropped back a bit. In their place, he's added Arkansas and
Tennessee to a new top six.
"Those are the ones who have given me the most attention lately, the ones I feel
the best about right now," he said. "Nobody really has the edge right now."
Thornton has taken in two games thus far, the Clemson-Georgia matchup on Aug. 31
at Sanford Stadium and the Miami-Florida clash on Sept. 7 at The Swamp. "They
were great," he said. "I had a real fun time at both of those games. I got to
meet a lot of coaches and talk to some other great players while I was there. I
really liked the stadiums and the excitement of the crowds. They both have a lot
of tradition."
In two games this season for LaGrange (2-0), Thornton has rushed for 350 yard on
35 carries and scored seven touchdowns. He's coming off a junior season which
saw him rush for 1,592 yards and 21 touchdowns in leading the team to a Class 3A
state championship.
Thornton is also a member of the Rivals.com Georgia Top 50
team.
