Four-star DB Enzo Jennings announces Penn State commitment

It has been a tumultuous last few weeks on the recruiting trail for Penn State, with a few de-commitments from top prospects and several new additions to its 2020 class. Thursday morning brought goods news, though, because Rivals250 defensive back Enzo Jennings announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions following an official visit to State College the previous weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jennings took a series of official visits in the month of June, starting with Kentucky the weekend of June 7. He then went to Pittsburgh the weekend of June 14 and finished his June tour with an official visit to Penn State this past weekend. On Monday, June 24, Jennings set a commitment date for the upcoming Thursday, but quite a bit transpired over those three days and the commitment was nearly postponed. Penn State was always the odds-on favorite to land the commitment once Jennings announce it on Monday, but Kentucky had made a strong impression with its official visit, and they also have a commitment from Jennings’ five-star teammate Justin Rogers. Oklahoma also jumped in with a late offer on Wednesday, and the option of taking his recruitment into senior year and using his last two official visits was considered. In the end, though, Jennings determined that Penn State was the place for him and now was the right time to make that decision official.

IN HIS WORDS

“(I chose) Penn State because it’s a great degree, great strength and conditioning program, family atmosphere, I will have a chance to come in and play and I’ve developed a great bond with my position coach Tim Banks.”

RIVALS’ REACTION

Penn State would have been my pick for Jennings since early in the process, but it was anything but easy for the Nittany Lions to land the four-star’s commitment. James Franklin’s staff stayed the course, though, and were rewarded with the commitment. As was noted earlier, Jennings does still have two official visits available to him. His friend and teammate Justin Rogers took an additional official visit after committing to Kentucky last month, but only time will tell whether Jennings decides to use his remaining trips. Franklin and Co. will need to stay vigilant and make sure this commitment stays solid. We currently list Jennings as cornerback, but Penn State plans to bring him in at safety. The size to play safety is certainly there, and he will provide above average coverage skills for the position. Our last evaluation of him at the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp in Cincinnati suggested he may be outgrowing the cornerback position anyway, and we will be watching senior year closely to see where his size and skill development is headed.
