Four-star 2024 QB DJ Lagway commits to Florida

Willis (Texas) four-star 2024 quarterback DJ Lagway made his commitment to Florida official on Wednesday afternoon as the Gators add a key early piece to its junior class.

For Lagway, it was a no-brainer to roll with Billy Napier and what he is building in Gainesville as he will step into The Swamp as someone who can immediately contend for a starting position.

"I love the coaching staff," Lagway said. "I have really good relationships with Coach Napier and (offensive analyst Ryan O'Hara) so I feel like I'd fit really well in that offense."

Napier stands out in his vocal approach to both Lagway and his offense, and it's a system he sees himself fitting into seamlessly.

"He's a real down-to-Earth guy, I like that," he said. "He's really detail-oriented. Sitting in meetings, he really knows his ball and I definitely want to get developed by him."

Aside from the coaching staff, Lagway sees an opportunity to etch his name among the greats that have played the position at Florida such as Tim Tebow and Chris Leak.

"Just the overall history that Florida brings," Lagway said. "They've had three national championship quarterbacks and I definitely want to be in that conversation one day. Overall, it's a true SEC environment and I can't wait to get to Gainesville."

On his multiple visits to Gainesville, there was a clear separation from the rest of the programs that were recruiting him when it came to how well he was treated.

"The way they showed love when I was down there," he said about what stood out the most. "They showed a tremendous amount of love. Definitely one of the best visits I've been on. I always have a good time when I'm down there."

With a commitment now in the rearview, Lagway's main focus shifts to recruiting a No. 1 class for the Gators.

"I'm just gonna focus on getting better and recruit for this class," he said. "I want to have the number-one class. That's the huge thing for me."

At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Lagway is the No. 75 ranked recruit in the country for the class of 2024, according to Rivals. He is the No. 1 ranked dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 12 recruit from the state of Texas.

COMMITMENT ANALYSIS

Lagway provides a unique skillset that extends past his lively arm and his ability to manage an offense from behind center, as his dual-threat ability has proven to be deadly to 6A programs across the state of Texas.

During his junior season in which he played eight games, Lagway threw for 2,085 yards and rushed for 517 yards while accounting for 31 total touchdowns compared to just five interceptions. Compared to his sophomore season, Lagway saw a mass improvement in play processing and decision-making.

Moving forward, being able to fully sprout as a playmaker that involves everyone on the field will allow Lagway to rise in stock, but he is well on his way to proving his worth as one of the nation's top signal-callers in the class of 2024.
