2018 Angleton, Texas, safety B.J. Foster will likely finish the upcoming football season as one of the state’s most sought-after defensive backs, and his recruitment is already off and running.

Foster holds offers from Baylor, Houston, Texas A&M, TCU and Texas-San Antonio, but it’s the Cougars that seemingly have the jump on things. Foster has taken full advantage of his proximity to the Houston campus, and already is pretty familiar with the program.

“A lot of our guys have gone there and had successful careers,” he said of former Angleton players. “I try to go over there whenever they have practices, get over there a couple of times a week to get to know some of the players and coaches.”

He says that Houston’s ongoing improvements to its facilities paired with his potential role on the defense has made the hometown option an attractive one.

“The staff has shown me around there and it’s not done yet, but they showed me pictures and they’re going have a real nice locker room,” he said. “They play a lot of man-coverage on defense, and I like to play in man as a safety.”

The Aggies are perhaps the next closest team in terms of exposure and time spent with Foster early on. He was offered while attending A&M’s recent Junior Day at the end of February. He noted that on his visit he was impressed by the resources made available to players to help them complete their education.

Foster said that he plans on returning to College Station for the Aggies spring game on April 9, and then attending Houston’s the following week.

“Texas A&M is looking pretty good right now,” he said. “My visit was great; the locker room was nice, the facilities are looking good and I got to meet with a lot of coaches and players.”

While both schools are looking to build on the momentum of recent offers and visits, Foster’s only offer to play offense has come from Baylor. Physically, he certainly looks more the part of his preferred free safety position, but there is no denying his athleticism -- or productivity on offense.

Last season, Foster rushed for more than 1,000 yards and scored 18 total touchdowns, but the Bears may have to adjust their strategy barring him finishing with an even more extraordinary season offensively in 2016.

"It’s iffy," he said about committing as an offensive player. "I like free safety more."
