Fortune couldn't wait, commits to West Virginia

Nicktroy Fortune had a date picked out to announce his commitment next month, but just about a month earlier than planned, he has committed to the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Virginia finished second on his list with Georgia Tech next.

That first visit to Morgantown early in June did the trick and he will be back, this time at a commitment July 28.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

"I fell in love with the mountains of West Virginia, the atmosphere and the coaches and being real cool were reasons why I committed to West Virginia," said Fortune.

"I was going to commit in August, but I wanted to commit earlier so I can get the recruiting process out the way. I knew 100-percent that this is where I want to be.

"I told Coach Belk about my decision first and he got excited and was happy. Then he told the head coach (Dana Holgerson) and he hit me up excited to tell me he’s happy for me to be part of the family.

"It was a hard decision because Virginia really had my eye, but it was just something about West Virginia in the back of my mind telling me this is where I need to be.

"I have visited there once (June 6) and the vibe on campus is smooth. I loved there a lot and I was like, yeah this is where I want to be for sure. I made my mind up when I first got to campus and after touring the facilities, that’s when I knew that West Virginia is where I want to be. I feel comfortable there.

"Coach Belk (defensive backs) reminds me a lot of my defensive back coach and that made me want to commit there even more.

"West Virginia really begin to be a favorite when I was watching them last year and seeing how dynamic they were. Also, being a fan of Rasul Douglas and Karl Joseph — I was like yeah I want to follow their footsteps."

RIVALS REACTION

The Mountaineers signed three prospects out of Georgia in 2018 and already, in 2019, they have three verbal commitments. It is clear they like the talent in the Peach State and Fortune is a good pick-up. He is a defensive back that is still growing and will continue to fill out. He had a big spring when schools saw him practice, but West Virginia offered in the spring of 2017. He is ranked as an athlete, but that will change to cornerback when we update rankings next. He has good size, good length and he is one of the top defensive backs in the Peach State.
