Sophomore wide receiver Johntay Cook II is no longer on the Texas football roster, Orangebloods.com has confirmed.
The expectation is that Cook now intends to enter the transfer portal with up to three years of eligibility remaining. For non-graduate transfer and players who did not go through a head coaching change, the winter window for the transfer portal opens on Dec. 9 and closes on Dec. 28.
He played in six games during the 2024 season, recording eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. According to Pro Football Focus, Cook played in 114 offensive snaps this season.
As a true freshman in 2023, Cook amassed eight receptions for 136 yards and zero scores. In 20 career games, he has recorded 16 catches for 273 yards and two touchdowns.
Later on Thursday, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed Cook's departure from the program.
Cook was a five-star wide receiver prospect out of DeSoto High School in Texas in the 2023 class. He received 40 scholarship offers as a high school prospect.
He ranked as the No. 24 overall prospect in the 2023 cycle, and as the No. 4 wide receiver and the No. 5 recruit in the Lone Star State.
Cook originally committed to the Longhorns in June of 2022 and signed with Texas in December of that year. He arrived in Austin as in early enrollee in January of 2023.
