Florida wideout earns first offer

Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot wide receiver Ross Lane's strong academics have landed him an early scholarship offer.
The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder is strong in the classroom-- he holds a 3.5 core grade point average and recently scored a 1130 on the SAT.

"Northwestern told me they have a scholarship for me," Lane said. "I've been getting stuff from almost every school. There aren't really many schools I haven't gotten anything from. I've gotten stuff from Michigan, Florida State, North Carolina.. all those schools."
Lane put Northwestern at the top of his list because of their early offer though did name a few other favorites.
"To play in Florida would be really good so really any of the Division I Florida schools," Lane said. "Then out of state I really like North Carolina."
Lane said location wouldn't really factor into his decision but he would look heavily at academics.
"Northwestern is really good academically so that's a major reason why I like them. I need a school that has good academics and good connections. Another thing is I don't want to go to a school where it's not the right type of offense for me. I also want to win. I haven't really been on a winning team."
Lane also plays free safety and punts for Bishop Verot. He couldn't recall his exact receiving stats the 2002 season but he does know he has combined for about 1,140 receiving yards the last two seasons with at least 13 touchdowns. He was named to the All-Area team last season.
"I like to compare myself to David Boston a little bit," Lane said.
Lane hasn't made any firm plans yet regarding summer camps.
"I'm trying to get to some of the day camps. I don't want to overdo it and go everywhere the whole summer."
