Florida State lands Rivals100 cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.

Asante Samuel’s college decision didn’t send shockwaves through the recruiting world. It didn’t even send them through his front yard. Florida State fans won’t much mind the lack of drama, though. What’s important to them is having one of the country’s top cornerbacks in the fold.

Samuel’s commitment is what they wanted. And, on Thursday, it’s what they got.

“It feels like family up there,” Samuel said of Florida State. “I’ve been going up there for the past two or three years. I’m comfortable there. It feels like home. I knew that what I want go.”

A Rivals100 defensive back, Samuel has had his mind made up for some time. In fact, he informed the Seminole coaches days before he announces his decision publicly. The commitment was received in the manner anybody would expect.

“They were just excited, man.” Samuel said. “hey were excited to have me joining the team. They want to keep it going in recruiting.”

Immediately upon receiving his commitment, Jimbo Fisher’s staff started carving out a role for the Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas standout. It seems the Seminoles know exactly what they have in Samuel and have a fully formed plan on how to use it.

“They say they were going to use me a nickel and at corner a lot because I’m quick and have a lot of good instincts,” Samuel said. “They talk about how they’re going to play me a lot.”

Samuel, the No. 3 cornerback and No. 24 overall prospect in the class of 2018, will not join Florida State until next fall, as his high school does not allow for early graduation.

Samuel intends to take official visits this fall despite his verbal commitment to Florida State.
