Florida kicker heads to ACC

Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas kicker Joe Surgan was one of the more highly recruited kickers in the Southeast. Definitely put the emphasis on the word was, because the 6-foot-4, 200-pounder made an oral commit earlier tonight.
“Joe has committed to the Duke,” Aquinas special teams coach Tim Conrad said. “Joe called coach Kelly, coach Chatham and coach Roof to let them know.”

So what type of player is Duke getting?
“Joe is an all-state kicker,” Conrad said. “He was one of the more highly recruited players in the nation. Most coaches don’t know how to find a kicker unless they know something about guys like Joe. He has cannon for a leg and is just a great kid.”
Surgan also had an offer from Auburn, Florida, Penn State, Northwestern, Alabama and Harvard. Surgan sports a 3.6 GPA and scored a 1100 on his SAT. On the gridiron, he’s equally impressive. He was 24 of 25 on extra points, eight of 10 with field goals and had a long of 48 yards in his junior campaign.
