Fla. WR Simpkins picks Utah

Hallandale (Fla.) High School wide receiver Demari Simpkins saw what he needed to see during his visit to Utah. He took in the sites, toured the facilities, and spoke with the Utes' coaching staff. After that, all that was left was for the three-star prospect was a commitment announcement.

He made that on Sunday afternoon. And, with that, he was a member of Utah's 2016 class.
"Basically, it helps that we run the same offense as they run at Hallandale," Simpkins said. "I have a chance to start as freshman there because I'm graduating early and they have a lot of players leaving. I just got back from Utah on Friday. I just felt like all that I saw, and everything else, made it the place for me."
Simpkins' visit to Utah included most of the standard recruiting fare. He toured the town and met with the coaching staff. He saw the athletic facilities and checked out academic options. He was left with plenty to talk about once his trip was in the books.
"There's a lot of stuff to do there," Simpkins said. "You don't have to go far away just to have fun. There's a lot of events and things on campus and it's all very nice."
Simpkins informed the Utah coaches of his intention to commit on Friday afternoon. According to him, the response was a mix of shock and excitement. After the smoke cleared, though, it didn't take long for the Ute staff to start talking Xs and Os.
Months before he arrives on campus, a plan for Simpkins already exists.
"They just want to get the ball in my hands," Simpkins said. "They want me to make big plays. They kind of run a dink-and-dunk offense, so they try to get playmakers in the open field and have me make plays. It's the same thing we do in high school."
Simpkins, who is rated as the No. 89 overall prospect in the state of Florida, chose Utah over fellow finalist Wisconsin. He also claimed a number of other scholarship offers before narrowing his focus to include just the Utes and Badgers.
