Five surprises on National Signing Day

Rivals.com analyst Jason Howell covers some of the biggest shockers so far on National Signing Day.

Signing delayed

On Monday, Plantation (Fla.) Rivals250 running back Alex Collins turned heads when he announced his commitment to Arkansas, choosing the Razorbacks over Miami, Florida, Florida State and Wisconsin. Then on Wednesday word began to spread that Collins' letter of intent had not been received by Arkansas, as his mom did not want to hand over the papers. The reports are that the family wants him closer to home, but Collins is set on Arkansas and now we wait to see what will happen next.

Bayou bound

Tashawn Bower made an early pledge to Auburn, but after a lackluster season by the Tigers, he took some visits.

Going into signing day it was thought that if Bower did not go to Auburn, he would turn to Florida. Twitter reports Wednesday emerged that he signed a letter of intent for Florida, but he took to Twitter to deny that. In the end it was LSU, the final school he visited. It was a winding road, but in the end it led to Baton Rouge.

Prevot to Oregon

When reports emerged Tuesday that Alief (Texas) Taylor Rivals250 defensive end Torrodney Prevot told USC he was de-committing, all eyes turned toward College Station and the Texas A&M Aggies. Well, Prevot decided to pull a shocker on Signing Day. It started with a delay, followed by signing with Oregon. The Ducks have been in the mix for Prevot since the spring, but there has not been much chatter down the stretch run to signing day.

Triple take

Baldwin (La.) West St. Mary's three-star ATH Tre'Vell Dixon made his first commitment to Nebraska in January 2012. He then backed off that commitment before deciding again to pledge to the Cornhuskers following a January 2013 official visit. On Tuesday, word broke that he was no longer planning to head to Lincoln, opting instead for Tempe, Ariz., and the Arizona State Sun Devils. The news came as a surprise because while there was talk of him re-thinking his decision, it appeared Houston was the team to watch. With his decision to head to Arizona State in the open on Tuesday, news then began that his recruitment might not be over, after all, and on Wednesday the Cornhuskers were able to secure his signature on a letter of intent.

Last-minute switch

Alpharetta (Ga.) quarterback Joshua Dobbs gave the Sun Devils his commitment in June and -- until his flip Wednesday to Tennessee -- that's the way it stayed. Dobbs was lone signal-caller in the Sun Devils' class and the move caught the Arizona State staff flat-footed. Now the Sun Devils are left without a quarterback in their class. It was quite the stealthy steal by Butch Jones and Tennessee.
