Five-Star: Teams that fared well

BALTIMORE -- Plenty of college coaches were eagerly waiting to see how many of their recruits would do against top national competition at the annual Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge Presented by Under Armour. As always, the results were both positive and negative, which means some coaches should be happy while others may be a bit disappointed.

Let's start with the obvious reason that the Seminoles should be happy, and that was the commitment of four-star offensive lineman Josh Ball last Friday. During the actual competition, Ball had his up's and down's. He showed better during the morning drills on Saturday than he did later in the afternoon, but overall, at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, he showed he has what it takes to compete against the best. When it comes to the other commitments in attendance, four-star tight end Isaac Nauta was one of the more consistent pass catchers in attendance and dominated a majority of the linebackers. Four-star offensive lineman Baveon Johnson was a fierce competitor whose physicality made him one of the day's top overall performers. Class of 2017 four-star defensive end Ja'Len Parks, while not one of the top players at his position, did show flashes of why he is considered a top underclassmen in Florida.
Several other recruits who are considered Florida State leans also stood out. Four-star linebacker Devin Bush plays the position intelligently, which led to multiple interceptions. He also proved to be quicker in open space than expected. Class of 2017 four-star athlete Stanford Samuels looked the part of a big-time defensive back. He continues to get bigger and stronger, and was not afraid to go against the top wide receivers in attendance. Class of 2018 quarterback Joey Gatewood came in with a great deal of hype for a freshman and while he understandably experienced some difficulties, overall he never backed down and showed an amazing amount of upside.

Kendell Jones
Four-star defensive tackle Kendell Jones was already known as a physical freak before the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge, but to see him in person is always amazing. To think that he just turned 17 and is able to carry 360 pounds without almost any bad weight is stunning. He is obviously a load to deal with on the line, and while he isn't consistent, the ceiling is extremely high for Jones. Also, while they are not committed the Alabama, the five-star linebacker duo of Lyndell Wilson and Ben Davis should make the Crimson Tide coaching staff and fans extremely happy. While some of the bigger linebackers in attendance experienced problems covering quicker running backs and tight ends, Wilson and Davis never looked out of place. Both have stardom written all over them.

Four-star defensive end Jonathon Cooper earned defensive line MVP honors. Already committed to the Buckeyes, Cooper was not the biggest end in attendance, but his combination of speed to the outside and overall strength made him a match-up nightmare for tackles. He also showed one of the top motors of anyone at the camp. Another commitment, Kareem Walker, did not dominate to the same level Cooper did, but he did show some improved skills that were lacking at previous camps. He looked more sudden in his cuts during drills and one-on-ones, and seemed to have worked on his route running abilities. It's difficult for a running back to truly excel during a camp setting, but Walker did enough to get noticed positively on numerous occasions. Two underclassmen that also excelled and currently have the Buckeyes very high on their list are four-star wide receiver Trevon Grimes and four-star defensive back Richard LeCounte. Grime was one of the more consistent receivers in Baltimore, while LeCounte had some great moments last Saturday.

T.J. Chase
MichiganClick Four-star commitment T.J. Chase was in the running for wide receiver MVP after being one of the more productive overall players during the 7-on-7 tournament. He was one of the best route runners, while also showing an improved burst and big play ability. While other elite receivers have had off days at camps, Chase always produces. Four-star commitment Sean Pollard proved to be one of the more versatile offensive linemen during one-on-ones. He challenged himself by going against the top defensive tackles, but then slid over and tested his abilities against speedy ends. Technically impressive, Pollard should prove to be a very valuable part of Clemson's offensive line in the future. Here to view this Link.
Michael Onwenu
Four-star offensive lineman Michael Onwenu proved to be one of the pleasant surprises, especially after he measured in at 6-foot-2 and 367 pounds. Considering his massive size, he still showed exceptionally agile feet. His balance and leverage were also some of the best of all the linemen in attendance. Another offensive lineman who did extremely well, who is considered a heavy Michigan lean, is four-star Terrance Davis. Similar to Onwenu, Davis showed impressive technique and power to overwhelm many of the defensive linemen. He also proved to be light on his feet during drills and showed a non-stop motor during one-on-ones.
Teams with concerns

Four-star defensive end commitment Shane Simmons struggled throughout the day against some of the bigger, stronger offensive tackles. He continues to look more like a linebacker in a 3-4 defense every time we see him at a camp setting. Four-star commitment Lavert Hill actually started off as one of the better defensive backs during the morning session, but then had a rough go at it during the 7-on-7's. Finally, while Miles Sanders did not have a bad outing, he also did not impress to the levels we expected. While it is difficult for a running back to truly shine during a camp setting, Sanders did not make the plays we though he would during 7-on-7's and that was somewhat disappointing.

Breland Brandt
Four-star commitments Lokeni Toailoa, Breland Brandt and Darian Owens all experienced their fair share of struggles. Linebackers tend to struggle against running backs and tight ends at camps, but Toailoa was slower than we expected and Brandt just looked raw and overmatched at times. Owens did not necessarily have a bad day, but he also never managed to stand out compared to many of the other elite wide receivers in attendance.
