Saivion Smith's commitment to LSU unfolded with an odd aura surrounding it.
Leading into the announcement, the 2016 five-star never confirmed that he would be make a public commitment. Instead, he painted his Tuesday afternoon appearance on ESPNU as a way to announce a top five.
News of a possible commitment leaked out prior to the broadcast, so Smith's plan of making some sort of shocking decision took a hit. Still, the deed was done and it was done in front of a television audience.
"Me and my family, we prayed about it and talked about it a lot," Smith said. "We feel like we want to bring an end to the recruiting process. I'm going to take my talents and play football at the next level for Louisiana State University. For the Tigers."
Surprise or not, Smith is a member of LSU's 2016 recruiting class and he seems thrilled about his situation. What's done is done, and, even if Signing Day is close to a year away, Smith does not intend to make a second verbal commitment, but he will take his official visits this fall.
"I am 100 percent committed to LSU," Smith said on ESPN.com.
Smith, who recently attended LSU's junior day, is the No. 1-rated safety in the class of 2016. He is the No. 21 overall player in the country. He says he will actively recruit for LSU from this point forward and is relieved to have made an early verbal commitment.
"This lets me really focus on academics and focus on my team," Smith said.
