Despite being a five-star prospect with scholarship offers from all over the country, safety Chad Jones was still shocked when he got the call.
Jones found out some time ago that he was being selected for the inaugural Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on Jan. 4 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Even with everything he's achieved in his high school career, he still admitted it was a pretty great moment.
"I knew I was going to play in some all-star game, but when guys were getting picked for other games, I didn't know what was going to happen," Jones said. "When Rivals.com called, I was shocked. I didn't even know they were involved with a game.
"I just thank those people that invited me."
Jones says he's not going to take this opportunity lightly. Though he has drawn scholarship offers from the likes of Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Ole Miss, and Southern Cal, he still has something to prove.
It starts with his frame.
"I'm going to put my name out there to people who think I'm too big to play safety," Jones said. "Some people think I'm overrated or whatever, but since it's on TV I'm going to put on a show. I'm looking to have fun, of course, too."
As for recruiting, Jones has taken one official visit so far to Southern Cal. He plans to officially visit Florida State in January. The Baton Rouge (La.) Southern Lab prospect says that the in-state LSU Tigers and the Trojans are his two favorites.
"I like the coaching staff at USC and just how they operate over there," Jones said. "I went out there for that trip and I really enjoyed being around all of the players. With LSU, it's like family over there. It's so close I don't know if I'll take an official visit there or not.
"I'm not saying USC couldn't be like family if I got to know them better, but I've just been around LSU so much that it feels comfortable."
Jones says he'll take several more visits before making a final decision.
