Position: Receiver
Size and speed: Fields is 6-foot-1, 183 pounds and has been timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.4 seconds. He has a 250-pound bench press and is already qualified with an 820 on the SAT.
Honors: Fields was an all-district pick as a junior.
Statistics: Fields caught 37 passes for 481 yards and one score as a junior. He averaged 13 yards a catch.
Favorite Schools: Fields lists his top teams as Colorado, Kansas, TCU, Notre Dame and Texas.
Skinny: Recruiting fans from all over the Big 12 Region know that Dallas South Oak Cliff is home to one of the nation’s better receiver – Lendy Holmes. However, what many fans don’t know is that SOC is also home to another talented receiver. That receiver is 6-foot-1, 183-pound Dexton Fields.
“Lendy and I are very good friends,” Fields said. “We work hard with each other and push each other to be the best that we can be. I think we’ve learned a lot from each other.”
So what did he learn from Holmes?
“I look at him and see his speed,” Fields said. “So, I’ve been working hard and busting my butt to go out there and compete with him in the speed department. He doesn’t beat me as much as he used to.”
So what has Fields taught Holmes?
“He sees my footwork and how I’m able to use my moves to get away from the defenders,” Fields said. “My favorite route it the hitch. I love to take the short pass, then do what I do and break it long for the big play.”
Fields should know something about big plays. Despite playing for a 3-7 squad as a junior, he did average a whopping 13 yards a catch. Teamed with Holmes, who also averaged 13 yards a catch, the SOC duo forms one of the top pass-catching combinations in the entire Midlands Region.
And with that comes the attention from the college coaches.
“I’ve been getting the love from the college coaches,” Fields said. “I don’t have any offers quite yet, but Colorado and Kansas were up at the school (Wednesday) and they’re sending me a lot of hand-written letters. TCU is also very interested and Texas has started to send me a lot of stuff, too.”
But there is one school sending stuff that Fields hopes to get even more attention from – Notre Dame.
“I grew up a fan of Notre Dame and Michigan,” he said. “Michigan isn’t sending me a lot, but Notre Dame is. If they were to recruit me, I would be very interested in seeing what it’s like up there. I just remember watching them on TV every weekend and how good they always would be.”
