Fast-rising TE holds three BCS offers

As college coaches make their rounds to get an in-person look at high school football players this spring, some sleepers and new names are beginning to emerge. One such name that has seen and should continue to see his stock rise is Frisco (Texas) Wakeland tight end Trent Smiley.

Last season with Florida State quarterback signee Will Secord at the helm, the Wakeland offense utilized more wide receivers in its system. But at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds with 4.6 speed, Smiley can expect to be a big part of the offense as a senior.

"We've got screens to him, we do everything with him," said Wakelad head coach Marty Secord. "He's a featured guy. We didn't use as much tight ends last year. That kind of suited Will [Secord]. We're trying to run the ball a little better. The good thing about [Smiley] is that we can sneak him out into the flat and he's got good speed after the catch."

Already, Smiley has made an impression on college coaches. He holds official offers from Oklahoma State, Kansas and Wake Forest. Arkansas, Texas A&M and Florida State are also all very interested. As coaches come into the Wakeland football office and practice fields, Smiley has been winning them over right away.

"We've emailed a lot of people his highlights, especially the ones that he's wanted us to," said Coach Secord. "They like what they're seeing. They're not going to make an offer off of film but when he walks through the door, he's impressive."

With the success of tight ends at Big 12 schools like Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State Smiley could be in high demand for area programs.

"He's going to be great for somebody that utilizes a tight end. He fits into that mold kind of like the way they use tight ends at places like Missouri."

Packaged with the speed, athleticism, hands and toughness that you want out of a tight end, it is easy to see why schools are beginning to jump onto the Smiley bandwagon. Moreover, on top of his physical attributes, Smiley is a high character kid and according to his head coach "an outstanding young man."
