Farrell Freshman 15: Nos. 4-6

The regular season has ended and despite a weird 2020 we are still doing a Farrell Freshman 15 and naming the top true freshmen in the country. And this was a deep group this season. We continue with Nos. 4-6.

6. RB Deuce Vaughn, Kansas State

The skinny: Vaughn committed to Kansas State during the spring after his junior season over offers from Missouri, Arkansas, USF, Army and Air Force. While his small frame slowed down his recruiting process, it didn’t slow him down on the field as he rushed for 652 yards and seven touchdowns, had 434 yards and two touchdowns receiving and returned kickoffs for the Wildcats.

Farrell’s take: Vaughn is small and that kept him from four-star status, but he found the right fit at Kansas State and has been a human highlight. Darren Sproles anyone?

5. DE Myles Murphy, Clemson

The skinny: Murphy’s recruiting process focused on Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State before culminating in a battle between the two Tigers. At the conclusion of his spring game, Murphy made it official by committing to Clemson. While most of the true freshman buzz at Clemson steered toward Brian Bresee, Murphy quickly jumped to the forefront. With 34 tackles, nine tackles for loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles, he will be a major contributor in the upcoming playoff.

Farrell’s take: Murphy was a top-five player nationally for a reason, and he lived up to that hype with a quick start at Clemson. He was overshadowed a bit by Bresee in recruiting for this Clemson class, but he has started better. He’s elite.

4. WR Marvin Mims, Oklahoma

The skinny: Mims initially committed to Stanford during the summer leading up to his senior season, but he then flipped to Oklahoma in November. He also seriously considered Notre Dame and TCU earlier in his process. While the Sooners are loaded with talented wide receivers, Mims quickly emerged this fall with 36 receptions for 583 yards and eight touchdowns during the regular season.

Farrell’s take: Mims was a godsend for the Sooners with injuries and suspensions at wide receiver and he became Spencer Rattler’s most comfortable target early. He’s going to be the next in line when it comes to great OU receivers.
