Even more offers could be nearing for Spencer Sanders

Spencer Sanders hasn’t overthought his recruitment once since it’s started, but that doesn’t mean the 2018 dual-threat quarterback hasn’t been on the minds of numerous programs. With performances like the one he turned in against Frisco-Lone Star last Friday night, it’s easy to see why.

He wasn’t always sharp, but there is a clear gamer element to Sanders’ makeup and he was the unquestioned motor of his Denton-Ryan offense in a breezy 51-34 victory. Sanders had a hand in every touchdown his team scored, whether making a pass or running things in himself.

“I feel exhausted, but it was a great game,” he said. “We started fast, the offensive line gave me time, it was a great game.”

Sanders rushed for over 150 yards, including a few highlight-worthy jukes and leaps over defenders. He didn’t think twice in taking what was presented to him, and his athleticism can be a clear asset to any offense.

“They were dropping eight,” he said. “You drop eight, I’m running the ball no matter what. They were leaving the middle wide-open for me.”

Sanders has now reached a double-digit offer total, but a couple of schools that haven’t offered yet have become interesting pieces in the puzzle of his recruitment now as well.

IN HIS WORDS

On Houston

“Houston has been sending me a lot of fan mail, a lot of fan mail,” he said. “That’s a great start that they’ve had. I watch Oklahoma just because of the quarterbacks that have come through there, so I watched that first game and it was a heck of a game.

“Cincinnati had the lead in the fourth quarter and lost 40-16!? Come on.”

On Oklahoma, who hadn’t yet played Ohio State when interviewed

“It would be a great win against Urban Meyer - he’s one of the best coaches in the NCAA,” he said. “Whether they win or lose, if they can walk out of there and score more than 20 points on the board, you’re a great team, because that’s Ohio State.”

On which schools Sanders is building interest in for future visits

“I like all my offers right now and I could take a visit anywhere,” he said. “You have to show that you want me, and you got me then.”

RIVALS REACTION

Sanders isn’t the most polished prospect at his position, but he certainly has a lot of the tools to be an effective college quarterback. Power Five conference schools are starting to form a line for his services, but he has never claimed to consider committing early and maintains his focus is on continuing Ryan’s undefeated season.

“I’m just focused on football this season,” he said. “I’m sorry, I hate to put it out there like this, I’m just focused on going to Week 16. That’s my goal, I’m not thinking about anything else.”

Sanders’ recruitment is far from over and he’s of no shortage of options. He’s a better fit for an offense that is going to make equal use of his running ability as his arm, but is looking more and more the type to give college defenses fits with his readiness and ability to make plays in a variety of ways.
