The Elite College Combine 2004, held at the practice bubble at Giants Stadium in New Jersey Wednesday night, was billed as the best vs. the best from New Jersey, New York, Maryland, New England and Pennsylvania. And, for the 80-plus college coaches in attendance, it certainly lived up to its name.

While all eyes were on the seven Rivals100 members in attendance at one point or another, numerous players either solidified their standing as high school's best or stepped up a notch in the eyes of college coaches.
The two highlights of the evening were clearly the battle between offensive tackle Eugene Monroe and defensive tackle Callahan Bright and the macthup between wideout Derrick Williams and cornerback Michael Ray Garvin.
Monroe, who measured in at 6-foot-6 and nearly 330 pounds, combatted Bright's bull rush with his long arms and massive frame during the one-on-one drills. Both players got the better of the other at times, although Bright's combination of quickness and strength impressed everyone while Monroe's footwork and balance was as advertised.
While the big boys were going at it, Williams and Garvin matched up one-on-one at least 10 times with Williams getting the better of the battle for the most part. However, Garvin came away with perhaps the most coveted award on the evening -- the title of fastest man. Garvin's 4.30-second 40-yard dash edged Williams' 4.36-second effort and the New Jersey speedster also clocked in with a 4.22 (start was disputed).
Williams won the Wide Receiver and Offensive MVP on the day while Garvin took home the aforementioned fastest man trophy and the Defensive Back MVP Award.
Bright, who weighed in at 322 pounds, won the Defensive Line and Defensive MVP, barely beating out Jersey linebacker Brian Cushing (Linebacker MVP) and Melvin Alaeze. Other award winners included quarterback Dom Natale (Quarterback MVP), tailback Jaslee Rouson (Running Back MVP and only a sophomore) and offensive tackle Dennis Landolt (Offensive Line MVP).
Cushing and Alaeze were both stars of the testing period as was Maryland running back Morgan Green. At 216 pounds, Cushing registered an amazing 3.82-second pro-agility shuttle time and a 4.51-second 40-yard dash. Alaeze, at 269 pounds, ran an incredible 4.64-second 40-yard dash. Green long jumped 120 inches, tops on the day.
A few players who improved their stock on the day included super sleeper Shamar Taylor (4.37-second 40-yard dash), wideouts Isaiah Williams and Rahmir Cottman, defensive back Danny Oquendo and tight end Garrett Graham.
Other tremendous one-on-one matches on the evening included super sophomore Myron Rolle against New York wideout Nyan Boateng, linebacker LaMont Robinson against sophomore LeSean McCoy and offensive lineman Dave McClain against defensive tackle James McGillicuddy.
All in all, the event accomplished what it was intended for -- to provide a one-stop shopping look at the top players in the Northeast region for college recruiters.
More to come including the Top 10 players, super sleepers and much more.
