ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – Day three of the EA Sports Elite 11 featured fewer repetitions by each quarterback in order to preserve their arms. Two special guests were on hand Wednesday to lend Elite 11 quarterback coach Bob Johnson a hand. NFL stars Carson Palmer and T. J. Houshmandzadeh helped the gunslingers learn more about the position and taught them how to continue good practice habits.
Rivals.com staff recruiting analyst Barry Every discusses all 12 of the quarterbacks and what they bring to the table with just one more workout left in the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order.
Barry Every's Elite 11 Day Three Analysis
Tajh Boyd, 6-1, 208, DQB, Hampton (Va.) Phoebus
For the second day in a row he had good velocity, spin and accuracy with his passes. There is no doubt he is one of the more popular players here, because a lot of parents were trying to get photos of their son with him.
Richard Brehaut, 6-2, 206, PQB Rancho Cucamonga (CA) Los Osos
Breahut's accuracy finally paid off as he won the Golden Gun Award on Wednesday. Not only did he win, but he set an accuracy-point record and was the only one to hit the money ball.
Allan Bridgford, 6-3, 213, PQB Mission Viejo (CA) Mission Viejo
Bridgford is still going strong after three days of competing. He has a sizeable lead in the overall accuracy contest. He also threw some beautiful tight spiral fades in drill work.
Raymond Cotton, 6-4, 216, DQB Fort Meade (Md.) Meade
Found out that this kid has really taken to the coaching at the event and is picking up all the drill work more quickly than most. He also seems to be gaining confidence as his accuracy is increasing.
Garrett Gilbert, 6-4, 205, PQB, Austin (Texas) Lake Travis
Learned that his shoulder may have held him back some Tuesday. There is no doubt that day three was his best outing of the week. Gilbert was less mechanical and more accurate.
Andrew Maxwell, 6-3, 192 PQB Midland (MI) Midland
This quiet signal caller had another steady day. His footwork is excellent, and his arm strength is above average. Maxwell does not seem to be getting caught up in all the hype that comes with the event. He seems very well grounded.
AJ McCarron, 6-4, 189 PQB Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul's
McCarron really had an excellent day passing today. His only disappointment was coming so close to hitting the money ball yet coming up short. McCarron is definitely making a push toward being in the top six quarterbacks in this event.
Zach Mettenberger, 6-5, 229, PQB Watkinsville (Ga.) Oconee County
For the second day in a row, that real tight bullet pass was back in action. Mettenberger also put a ton of effort into the drills designed to help footwork, an area in which he needs to improve.
Aaron Murray, 6-1, 198, PQB Tampa (FL) Plant
His accuracy and placement of balls during drills is separating him from the rest of the group. I am asked daily if he is tall enough ... and the answer is yes, he is. He possesses the mobility and footwork to make up for any lack of height.
Bryn Renner, 6-3, 192 DQB West Springfield (Va.) West Springfield
One day after winning the Golden Gun Award, he followed it up with a second-place showing in the event. His athleticism really stands out to me, and it really shows up in the accuracy contest. The quarterbacks have to run to five different stations spread out over a 60-yard field.
Tom Savage, 6-4, 217, PQB Springfield (PA) Cardinal O'Hara
I had a chance to talk to a friend of the family and he said my guess on his weight was very close. He currently is 225 pounds and he holds the weight really well. His lower body already looks similar to Carson Palmer's. He seemed pleased with his effort today.
Eugene Smith, 6-3, 182, DQB, Miramar (FL) Miramar
I talked with several people and they all agreed Smith's performance at this camp has been above average and much better than his earlier showings. His release has a tendency to be a tad slower than others, but his accuracy and velocity make up for any shortcomings in his release.
