Dylan Wright on changing positions, Sooners love

DALLAS, Tex. -- 2019 wide receiver Dylan Wright has been a suddenly intriguing prospect after he closed out the spring with offers from six FBS schools in two days following an Adidas satellite camp at UTSA in the beginning of June.

His most recent offer came from Minnesota on June 20, and many more are sure to come but in the meantime, he’s heading into his junior season with the mindset of tending to unfinished business.

“I still feel like I have a lot of work to do,” he said. “I don’t feel like I’ve got everything I want yet, so I’m still not going to be satisfied.”

Wright said that he has big dreams of making it in football, mostly to provide his family with something more than what it has now, and is off to a promising start with that. While he’s almost certain to have his choice of numerous top offers purely based on his build and athleticism, some teams are still waiting to pull the trigger after they see that he’s made a good enough adjustment to wide receiver.

“[Baylor] told me that if I run a 4.5 (40-Yard Dash) they would give me an offer,” he said. “But I think it really comes down to my first game because we play South (Oak Cliff) and people want to see how I do there. I don’t really have film because I played quarterback last year.”

IN HIS WORDS

On Nebraska, who was among the first to offer Wright

“It’s pretty chill with them right now,” he said. “They retweet and like all my pictures and they have a lot of fans that follow me, but that’s really it so far.”

“They’re probably in the top three-or-four for me right now,” he added. “I just don’t think I really play well in the cold.”

On Oklahoma, where he visited earlier in June

“The coaches were really showing me a lot of love when I went to go visit,” he said. “I went up there with Jaylon Robinson, and they were showing the love and I really like the school.”

“I saw where they were getting everything redone, getting a new weight room and all of that,” he added. “I wasn’t really looking at that, though, I just liked seeing how the coaches were interested in me and wanting to get to work with me at a few positions.”

RIVALS REACTION

Wright looks as though he could be a natural at any number of positions, but it seems he’s focused solely on improving his skills as a receiver. One of the things that he said made him an appealing target for the Sooners was their desire to get some bigger-bodied players to line up in the slot. He thinks that with a little more polish this offseason, he’ll be able to add Oklahoma to his list of big-time offers.

“I just have to work on my routes, really,” he said. “Cuts, how to get out of my breaks and stuff, but I’ve been going to training so I’ve been getting better at it.”
