MANDEVILLE, La. -- After picking up a number of top offers following his freshman season, 2020 Rivals100 defensive back Dwight McGlothern has recaptured the imagination of top football programs this spring.

The early leaders in his recruitment heading into his junior season are un impressive - albeit unsurprising - trio of LSU, Texas and Texas A&M. McGlothern opened his recruitment way back when with an offer from the Tigers and said now his relationship with the staff is one of most crucial to him at this point.

“I call them every Thursday - I actually have an alarm set,” he said. “They always want me to hit them up because they need DB’s - especially like me - you can’t find so many people like me with this length and speed in man coverage. There are a lot of people that can play zone, but not man.”

In recent weeks, McGlothern attended the Aggies spring game and was invited to both the Longhorns and Tigers games last weekend, but chose to forego those to not play a perceived favorite - while competing with his Fast Houston mates in the Pylon Bootleggers 7v7 tournament just outside of New Orleans. McGlothern was at Texas on Easter weekend to take in a Longhorns spring scrimmage and said he’s thinking about possibly returning to A&M this weekend for another visit.

IN HIS WORDS

On Texas

“When I called up Coach (Craig) Naivar, he had almost the whole defensive squad hit me up,” he said. “BJ Foster, Anthony Cook, almost all of them … They just wanted me to come out and get a feel for how it is, how they coach, how many DB’s they play and how many freshmen. It’s crazy that it looks like they will have so many freshmen playing, and you don’t see that at a lot of other colleges.”

“When I call up Coach Naivar, he’s always trying to get me - he’s recruiting me hard like he did the 2019 DB’s,” he said. “I feel like he’s recruiting me harder than anyone else that he’s trying to recruit in the state right now. That whole Texas staff, I feel like they appreciate me and I appreciate them - it feels like home.”

On Texas A&M

“It was nice, Coach Jimbo (Fisher) has something going on,” he said. “Especially when Leon (O’Neal) and all them get there - all those freshmen - they’re going to be tough. They’re going to win a Natty I feel like in a couple of years if they keep doing what they’re doing and Coach Jimbo gets them right.”

“They’re moving up big-time,” he said. “If I had to choose today, it would be between Texas, LSU or Texas A&M - that’s how hard they’re recruiting me.”

RIVALS REACTION

McGlothern said that he would like to make a trip out to LSU during the summer, and seems to have a clearer picture about which teams are starting to make him more of a priority. Although he has a somewhat unassuming personality considering his ability and potential, he is still very much interested in being shown that he’s a priority to the teams most seriously recruiting him. As he continues to fill out and develop his skills, he’ll be all the more desirable as a plug-and-play option in any secondary.
