Position: Defensive tackle
Size and speed: Kirchner is 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds. He has been timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.9 seconds. He bench presses 260 pounds and squats 500 pounds.
Honors: All-state, all-region, all-district
Statistics: Kirchner had 60 tackles, including 18 for loss, and four sacks as a junior.
Favorite schools: Virginia Tech, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia
Skinny: Kirchner has but one thing on his mind on the football field; get to the ball carrier with authority. He will be a very hot commodity for the top schools in the Southeast.
“Jon has the best first step I have ever coached,” says head coach Billy Mills. “He’s real quick off the ball and has great extension. He really controls the man in front of him and he always takes on two blockers. No team in our league will be able to block him this season.”
Kirchner knows what he does best on the field, and what he needs to work on to get to the next level.
“I was able to get to the quarterback pretty quick. Teams run a lot to the other side of the field to avoid me. I need to get my bench press better, and also my foot quickness.”
Kirchner has one team that stands out for him at this time.
“Virginia Tech is my favorite. If Tech offers early I’ll go ahead and commit. Both of my parents went to Virginia Tech, and they have a really good engineering program, which is what I want to major in. I just feel most comfortable there.”
Kirchner carries a 3.3 GPA at this time.
Tony Ball is recruiting Kirchner for Virginia Tech. He plans to camp at Virginia as well as the Nike camp at Virginia Tech.
