Dowrey is lineman to watch for 2014

College interest is starting up for 2014 defensive tackle Jordan Dowrey. The brother of 2012 Penn State commit Derek Dowrey is starting to get some looks of his own at Winchester (Va.) John Handley.

"I was first team all-district offense and second team defense last year. I had around 70 tackles," he said. "I try to play really aggressive on defense and get people off the ball, that's a big thing for me.

"Most colleges are looking more on offense, but I prefer defense."

Dowrey is talented multi-sport athlete.

"I placed fifth in the state in the heavyweight, but I'm looking more to do football in college," he said. "I was also four in the district in the shot putt."

No offers have come on yet, but colleges are taking a look.

"This camp season is going to be big," he said. "I have eight camps this spring, so we'll see at the end how things are looking.

"I'm going to Penn State, West Virginia, Appalachian State, Virginia, Old Dominion and Richmond. I think that's it, but I'm going to a couple twice to do offense and defense.

"I haven't had a whole lot of contact with schools yet, but hopefully after his fall it'll start going into that direction for offers."

Dowrey's brother Derek is heading to Penn State, so does that impact him?

"I'm not really looking at Penn State," he said. "I like the way they run the camps and it's a good camp to go to, but I'm really looking forward to going down to Appalachian State. That's the one camp I'm most excited about. I like things around the school, the environment, where it is and that type of thing. They play really good football."

Obviously this summer is just the beginning of trips for Dowrey and he is looking for a few things as he evaluates colleges more.

"I want to play really good football if I can," he said. "I don't want to be in a city, I'm not a fan of the city, that's why Appalachian State fits me so well. Location depends on the feel and where I am. As far as education, I want to find something that deals with the outdoors. I like being outside a lot."
