At Longview, standouts like Carderra Hunter and Malcolm Kelly seem to steal some of the spotlight but college coaches have already discovered that 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback James Pierce is one of the state’s best cover men also.
“I love the man-to-man,” Pierce said. “What’s best is that you can get them up on the line, and then push them around and do what you want to with them. That’s what I think I’m the best at – just pushing them and moving them around to where I want them, so they can’t catch the ball.”
Not too many people caught the ball this past Friday night as Longview cruised to a season-opening victory 40-15 over Marshall. Pierce played solid and hopes for many more victories, but with the recruiting process about to heat up after September 1 he is starting to turn his attention more and more toward his future.
“I really like three or four teams,” Pierce, who has a 4.4-second time in the 40-yard dash, said. “I have offers from Texas Tech, TCU and SMU. I’ve also talked with Malcolm about going to Oklahoma with him and Carderra, but not sure if Oklahoma really wants me at this point.
“I’d really like to go where ever Carderra goes since we’re tight.”
