The story was broke by former Long Beach Post and Telegram reporter Steve Irvine now with the Birmingham News.
Rivals.com has phone calls into the Barnes household and to Los Al for confirmation.
If this story turns out to be true, Alabama gets a quarterback who knows how to win. In his first year as a starter on the varsity level, Barnes led Los Al to an 11-2 record. As a sophomore, he led the JV squad to a perfect 10-0 record and as a frosh; he led the freshmen team to a 9-1 record.
Another thing that Barnes has going for him is that fact the son of John Barnes one of the most successful high school coaches in Southern California.
Being the son of a coach with an excellent track record for developing quarterbacks has helped the younger Barnes have an advanced knowledge of the game and has outstanding mechanics.
As a junior, Barnes was selected all-CIF Division I, first-team all-league and Long Beach Post-Telegraph Dream Team after throwing for 2,346 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also picked up another six touchdowns on the ground.
“Jimmy has a tall good release, moves well in the pocket and has a real strong, live arm,” Los Alamitos coach John Barnes said in an earlier interview. “He can read coverage and knows where to throw the ball.”
“At our level, Jimmy has to really understand the game,” Barnes said. “We see so many different coverages.”
