Derrick Jones Set For Busy January

Long Beach Poly (Calif.) wide receiver Derrick Jones took all of December off in terms of taking his official visits but is set for a busy month of January. The speedy wide out will take official visit No. 2 this weekend to Oregon.
Jones, 6-1, 175 pounds is one of the elite prospects in the West region this year. He has incredible speed and once he gets behind a defense, that’s all she wrote. Jones averaged an amazing 28 yards a catch as a junior and finished up his senior season with 49 catches for 892 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He impressed us all week during the CaliFlorida Bowl practices with his improved pass catching ability and didn’t drop a ball that we saw in any workout. On the recruiting front, Jones is ready for a hectic month ahead.
“I leave tomorrow for Oregon,” Jones said. “That should be a great trip, I heard there’s like 25 other players visiting and a lot of them played with me in the CaliFlorida Bowl. Everyone I’ve talked with always comments that the visit to Oregon is always one of the best to take and they said you just have a blast on the trip.
“The following weekend, (Jan. 16) I’m going to Florida State. That’s my childhood favorite and where I really wanted to go when I was just getting in to football. On the 23rd, it’s not set yet but I’m planning to visit Cal. They have probably risen the most in my eyes in the last few months. I’ve really been thinking a lot about Cal and a bunch of us talked about visiting there during the CaliFlorida week. I love the offense and they have a great coaching staff as well.
“My last trip will be to Miami on (Jan. 30). That’s another school I’ve liked for awhile. They’re always good and have a big play offense. USC is high on my list too but I’ve been there a lot and already know everything about the school. I don’t want to waste an official visit on them because it’s so close. Right now, things are pretty confusing for me. This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I probably won’t be ready to decide until close to Signing Day. Right now, I really have no idea what I’m going to do.”
Jones took an official visit to Arizona State back in October but said the only schools he's considering at this time are the four he's visiting this month along with USC.
