Demetreius Mayes has been close to committing

THE LATEST...

Demetreius Mayes hung out at the Rivals New Speed Combine last Saturday, rested up and he left the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Sunday with hardware. Mayes was named Defensive Line MVP Sunday after his impressive performance and he hopes to perform like that this spring when college coaches come around Miami (Fla.) Northwestern.

The 6-foot-3, 234 pound weakside end has half a dozen scholarship offers and Appalachian State recently added its name to that list. He plans to visit the Mountaineers April 29 and and he admits that he has thought about committing since he received the offer a couple of weeks ago.

IN HIS OWN WORDS...

"I have a connection to Appalachian State with Demetrius Taylor signing there in February," said Mayes. "We are good friends, he was a teammate of mine and he is really telling me a lot of good things about the school. He thinks Appalachian State would be a good fit for me because they play an aggressive style.

"The coaches there really are showing me a lot of love. They text me a lot and they are showing me the same type of love they showed Demetrius last year. I feel like their coaches care about me and even if I went to another school, I feel like they would want the best for me and be there for me.

"I like how they play. I have looked them up and they play hard, they are tough and when I watch their film, they play the way I like. They fly around.

"When I get up there, I want to see how it goes with the coaches and how it is on their campus. I will be watching how the coaches communicate with their players. I have thought about committing when they offered me on March 16, but I had to slow it down a bit. I know I like them a lot."

RIVALS REACTION: It would not be a huge shock to see Mayes go up to Appalachian State and commit during his visit. He will likely wait out the spring and see what new schools offer him, but his interest in the Mountaineers is legit and his connection there is something most school cannot offer.
