DeMarvion Overshown still 'Locked-in' with Longhorns commitment

ARP, Tex. -- The small town of Arp, who’s high school team is 2-5 while rebuilding after losing a number of seniors from last season’s squad, seems an unlikely place to find one of the best players in the country.

Last Friday night, Texas commit DeMarvion Overshown put on his usual display of highlight hits and would have scored his team’s only touchdown on a punt return, had it not been for a block-in-the-back penalty to negate it.

The four-star safety wasn’t the only player in the game headed to one of the state’s premier college programs. On the opposing New London-West Rusk side, three-star defensive end and Texas A&M commit Tyree Wilson was doing his part to shut out the Tigers offense and perhaps giving a glimpse of a rivalry that could potentially continue in the coming years.

“It’s always a fun game,” Overshown said. “Me and (Wilson) are messing around, I’m saying ‘Hook ‘Em’ the whole game, he’s saying ‘Gig ‘Em’ but he already knows what it is.”

Overshown’s relationship with another recruit has also been the topic of conversation recently, as he was part of a social media blitz by Longhorns commitments publicly calling for five-star cornerback Anthony Cook to commit to Texas as well. Cook has included the Longhorns in his final three and will announce his commitment on October 30.

“Considering (Texas) already has two other guys from Lamar, I’m sure D’Shawn (Jamison) and ‘Vonte (Woodard) are talking to him,” he said. “We just really trying to get him and close out that DBU, just keep talking to him, and hope that he picks us.”

IN HIS WORDS

On the group of defensive backs committed to Texas in 2018

“It’s something amazing,” he said. “Just to be a part of that, we could make history with that group and if we do keep that group together, we’ll just be looking to going to Texas and build and hopefully help bring Texas a national championship.”

On how he expects to fit in with Texas’ defense

“Coach (Todd) Orlando has a bunch of things that he wants to do with me,” he said. “I’m still going to be playing safety, but it’s going to be different formations where he’s going to roll me up and blitz me, and stuff like that.”

His official visit to Texas is still unscheduled, but his expectations for when he takes it

“I’ve already been out there numerous times,” he said. “I just expect it to be same old, same old; just a tight bond with the coaches, interact with the players, have fun and stuff like that.”

RIVALS REACTION

For as impressive a job as Texas has done landing the commitments of so many top defensive backs, it’s no surprise other teams are continuing to recruit them with the promise of less competition for playing time. Overshown said that others continue to contact him, but he’s not interested in playing for anyone other than the Longhorns.

FSU, Baylor, I still have all of them trying to recruit me, really,” he said. “But I told all of them I’m locked in.”
