DeAndre Square recaps recent visits

Linebacker DeAndre Square is one of the highest rated rising senior prospects on an always-talented Detroit Cass Tech team. The three-star holds 15 offers and recently made junior day visits to Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and Michigan State.

The most recent of those stops was to Kentucky, where he visited with a pair of coaches from Cass Tech along with teammates Jaren Mangham, Xavier Goldsmith, Dyontae Johnson and Eric Smith.

“This was my second time (visiting Kentucky),” Square said. “The first time I went up there they were just building the new facilities, so everything wasn’t up. So, when we just went up there everything was new. They are a big contender because I think I would have an opportunity to play early there, and I like that.”

Square went into the Kentucky visit already holding an offer from the Wildcats. Of the other schools Square visited this winter, Michigan State has also offered and his relationship with the Spartans remains strong.

“They constantly talk to me,” Square said. “I talk to Coach (Terry) Samuel a lot. It’s a good relationship. He is a great coach and a great guy. He knows how to separate football and real life.”

Square is looking to make a return visit to East Lansing for Michigan State’s spring game and he is also in the process of scheduling a trip to Wisconsin. Square’s next visit, though, could go to a different Big Ten school.

“I might be going to Ohio State this weekend,” Square reported. “They have a practice on Saturday, but I probably won’t be able to make it on Saturday and would have to go on Friday.”

Cass Tech has sent three former players to Ohio State in recent classes, including starting tailback Mike Weber.

“I talk to Mikey all the time when he comes back to the school,” Square said. “He basically says he loves the school and if I think it is the right for me, if I get the offer, then I should come.”

Recent offers for Square have come from Iowa, Temple and Western Michigan. He finished his junior season with 72 tackles, 8 sacks and 2 interceptions and was the Linebacker MVP at the Columbus, Ohio stop of the Rivals Camp Series last spring.
