DE Oakman picks up SEC offer

South Carolina does most of their recruiting in the surrounding states but they don't shy away from pursuing prospects outside of their region.
The Gamecocks have been impressed with what they have seen from Lansdowne (Pa.) Penn Wood defensive end Shawn Oakman and now they have offered him a scholarship.

The 6-foot-8, 240-pound lineman has a unique build and good athletic ability for someone his size, so it should come as no surprise that his recruitment would move from a regional battle to a national chase. Oakman had already received offers from UConn, NC State, Penn State and Rice.
"My coach just told me they (South Carolina) were offering," he noted. "They probably saw my film and just liked it."
Oakman said he would "most definitely" be interested in visiting South Carolina at some point, though he has not made plans to do so just yet. In fact, he doesn't have any plans to visit schools.
His last trip was to Penn State a couple of weeks ago. Oakman liked what the Nittany Lions have to offer.
"That went real well," he recalled. "They showed me a lot."
Oakman said the biggest factors in his decision will be playing time, the opportunity to win, and how strong the school is in his major -- history.
He plans on setting up some unofficial visits later this month.
