Laiatu Latu has made multiple trips in the past couple weekends to Cal - and that has to be a great sign early on for the Golden Bears.

The 2019 three-star defensive end from Carmichael (Calif.) Jesuit was especially positive about coach Justin Wilcox and his coaching staff in Berkeley.

“The coaches are all about the players and their best interest is in us,” Latu said.

“They care about the players’ character and education. They want each player to grow to be a man, not the man. They love hard work on and off the field.

“The whole coaching staff has the same mentality to make the player the best man and person they can be and the best football player they can be. The coaching staff keeps it real and doesn't put on a front to get the recruit to go to Cal.”

So far, Latu has been offered by Arizona, Cal, Fresno State, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, San Jose State, USC, Utah and Washington State.

The Carmichael Jesuit standout said Utah and Vanderbilt have been most aggressively recruiting him other than Cal, which has been coming after him the hardest.

In recent days, USC has offered and the Trojans are definitely a contender as well that Latu will consider moving forward.

“It was amazing to hear that I got the SC offer,” Latu said.

“I never thought I would get an offer from USC let alone all of my other offers. It was great meeting coach Tee (Martin) at my school. He is a cool guy.”
