Dallas playmaker commits to dream school

Wednesday night started out like just another night for Dallas (Texas) Skyline wide receiver Joe Powell but with one phone call from his coach, 'just another night' turned into an exciting and emotional evening that would decide his college football career.

With offers from Houston and Kansas already under his belt, Powell picked up a third offer on Wednesday night and as far as Powell is concerned, it can be his last.

"The night's been going real good," Powell said. "Oklahoma just offered and I committed. I really got no words. That's the one I've been waiting for. I was right at a basketball game just chilling with a group of girls and my coach called me and it just went from there. I'm just so excited. You have no idea."

Powell said that the relationship that he built with the coaches was really what sold him on the Sooners.

"Me and Jay Norvell, we have a real good vibe and we've been real close and I just feel like that decision was the decision for me. I just felt like I could fit in and play. I'm going to win a state championship and then go to Oklahoma and win a BCS championship."

The decision for Powell was so exciting that he was even moved to the point of tears.

"I was real emotional," he said. "I'm still real emotional right now. It's just cause that's what I've been waiting for. I told my mom and I'm just real excited about it. Just to see the smile on my mom's face and on my coach's face means so much."

Skyline assistant coach Ronald Bonds handles recruiting duties for Skyline's loaded program and talked about how much the offer meant to his wide receiver.

"When he came back from the junior day everything about him changed," Bonds said. "His grades, his work habits, everything was pushed to the max. He told me he has prayed that this offer would come and God answered his prayer. This young man's life has been changed.

"Joe is extremely excited. He had tears in his eyes. This offer means the world to Joe He is going to do everything to help OU get back to a national championship."

Oklahoma may be equally excited as Powell brings a versatile pass-catcher that has special teams value and great ability in space. The wide receiver is one of the fastest rising prospects in the state of Texas.

With this commitment, it's safe to say that Powell's recruitment is over. In fact, he had one more message he wanted to convey.

"I'm a Sooner baby!"
